Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking
Famous for its artisanal blankets and bedspreads, Val de San Lorenzo is a small village just a few kilometres from Astorga in the heart of the Maragatería region in the province of León. This restaurant, occupying an old stone house that was once used as a dairy (hence its name), boasts a decidedly rustic yet meticulous decor which provides the backdrop for an à la carte of traditionally based cooking (cured meat croquettes; “false” duck risotto with wild mushrooms; pistachio biscuit with raspberry mousse and lemon ice-cream etc), impressively complemented by a tasting menu (served to the whole table) and its famous “Cocido Maragato” stew (available by pre-order only). You’ll also find a handful of cosy guestrooms and, in a nod to local history, a loom that is over 300 years old. If you have time, make sure you visit the local textile museum, the Batán Museo.
