7 quai Thomas, Cancale, France
€€ ・ Breton
On the port of Cancale, Breizh Café has one motto: "A new take on crêpes." After all, the concept was originally born in Japan! The owner, Bertrand Larcher, was the first to export Brittany's galettes (buckwheat pancakes) to Tokyo, and several Japanese restaurants later, he has founded one back home. The produce is organic (eggs, cheese, meat) and first rate. The crispy flavoursome galettes and wafer-thin, soft pancakes are made entirely traditionally. The filling depends on your mood, ranging from classical to unusual: artichoke rolls, scrambled egg, Comté cheese or Saint Malo wakame seaweed. The upstairs window commands a splendid view of Cancale port. Something of a local landmark, it is often fully booked.
