Most people would simply mourn the loss if their favourite village restaurant closed. Not Edina Szalai-Hencz and her partner Csaba. Instead, they bought it, changed its name to ‘Fig’ – their favourite fruit – and gave it a smart, modern makeover. The large conservatory and small garden – where, pleasingly, you’ll find some potted figs – are the best places to sit. Colourful cooking focuses on traditional Hungarian flavours that are blended with restrained creativity, and herbs and flowers are a feature, adding a freshness to the rich, full flavours.
