MICHELIN Guide's Point Of View

In the Matten neighbourhood, just a block away from the River Aare, this restaurant is run by Gaston Zeiter. He is originally from the Valais canton, but settled here in the lower part of Bern's old town some time ago. In the stately old building that is the Zähringerhaus, he cooks up classic French cuisine, but also dishes with Swiss influences – for example, there is fried sea bass with risotto, as well as a terrific cordon bleu. Top tip: the bargain-price menu of the day! In addition to the charming restaurant, there is a wonderful garden terrace with venerable old trees and a covered outdoor area. The wine list is also well stocked, including with numerous Valais wines.
