One Star: High quality cooking
Dietmar Sawyere, whom many will know from Andermatt's The Japanese by The Chedi at Gütsch and The Japanese Restaurant, has taken over the reins at this 500-year-old inn. In the charming wood-panelled Stübli, Alpine produce takes centre stage and is put to work with original ideas and a pleasing blend of modern, classical and traditional approaches. A prime example of this is the Arctic char served with garden peas, smoked ham, pine needles and beurre blanc. Diners are invited to choose from an array of options to put together their own menu of four to six courses. To accompany your meal, there is a decent wine list featuring Swiss and French labels. Maître d' Nicole Sawyere heads up a well-coordinated and professional front-of-house team. In summer, make a beeline for the shaded terrace – it's a perfect spot for an aperitif! For overnight stays, this inn – considered to be the oldest in the Engelberg Valley – has attractive modern guestrooms.
