Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking
This longstanding restaurant in idyllic Irvington is a rather special place. Tucked along Main Street and framed by windows, it is bright and welcoming, thanks to mustard-yellow walls and art, and hand-blown glass light fixtures. A small, inlaid-tile bar out front welcomes one and all to dine on a wonderful, flavor-rich carte from Chef/co-owner Navjot Arora. Local, organic produce star in such complex, boldly spiced dishes as bhindi masala (imbued with tangy amchoor). Chana masala reaches delicious heights when paired with a sweet and nutty Peshawari naan, and pulu rasam, a lentil-based tomato and tamarind soup, and lamb keema pao, a spiced ground lamb dish, are two recent highlights. Mango chutney clearly shines here— so luscious, it may as well be jarred and sold.
